Recognition of transparent objects

The reliable recognition of bottles made of glass or plastic, transparent plastic packaging or films poses particular challenges for sensor technology in many manufacturing processes. To overcome these challenges, ipf electronic has added the ON450522 diffuse reflection sensor to its portfolio specifically for the recognition of transparent objects. The device works in a similar way to a retro-reflective sensor, but instead of a reflector, any diffusely reflecting object (ideally a metal part) is sufficient as a reference surface for the device.

This reference surface may be between 60 and 1,000 mm away from the sensor, whereby the maximum range is achieved on shiny metallic reference surfaces, while correspondingly smaller distances must be set for other materials. The sensor is taught in either on the device using a ferromagnetic tool or via pin 2 of the M12-connector (white core). The intuitive teach-in function can be used to set three different sensitivity levels with a damping of approx. 10% (detection of clear films, PET bottles or clear glass), 20% (clear glass bottles, multi-layer films etc.) and 30% (colored glass, less transparent bottles or opaque objects). The switching function normally open/ normally closed (light-on/dark-on mode) is also adjustable.

Another highlight of the new diffuse reflection sensor is the IO-Link interface, via which all sensor parameters can be adjusted and additional diagnostic information can be read out. The AY000138 universal mounting bracket is available for attaching the sensor.
