The all-rounder for precise distance measurements

There are often applications in which the distance of an object must be determined using a sensor. This requires a device with analog output, whereby it can be helpful to be able to adapt the measuring range of the sensor to the conditions so that the full analog current range is also available for smaller areas.

For large objects, ultrasonic sensors are usually used for distance measurement. However, if small parts need to be detected or high resolutions are required, this is often the task of laser sensors. However, such devices are often very expensive due to their complex technology.

As a real alternative, ipf electronic instead offers the OT450021 with a range of 60mm to 550mm. Within this range, the analogue current output (4 ... 20mA) can be parameterized completely freely. A push-pull switching output, also with freely selectable switching points, is also available. The so-called window function of the sensor is preset at the factory, i.e. the output is active between the two programmed switching points. The setting is made by simple teach-in.

The sensor can be parameterized even more easily using the IO-Link interface, which offers many additional setting options. For example, the start and final values for the outputs can be entered directly as numerical values in millimetres. The switching output can also be switched over to single-point mode or various time functions can be activated. Various teach modes and an additional virtual switching output that can be evaluated via IO-Link are also available. All settings can also be made during running operation.

And if a device should actually have a defect, it is very easy to replace it, as all stored parameter data can be transferred to the new device via IO-Link without causing lengthy, costly interruptions or downtimes, e.g. by reteaching the measuring range.

The OT450021 has a point-source LED as the transmitter element, the diameter of which is between 5mm and 8mm depending on the distance. This means that the light spot is larger than with a comparable laser device, but still has a clear focus. This makes the diffuse reflection sensor ideal for detecting small objects. The resolution varies between 0.1 and 1mm, depending on the distance range being measured.

All the features and functions mentioned make the OT450021 a real all-rounder - and at an extremely attractive price.
